FAQs

What is a crawl space conversion or basement dig out?

A crawl space conversion is an increasingly common remodeling project to give homeowners the additional space they need by increasing their square footage. We’ve had clients double the square footage of their home, turning their 2 bedroom, 1 bath homes into 5 bedroom, 2.5 bath homes. Clients have also turned their crawlspace into workspaces, creative studios, and apartments. All without changing the exterior of their home.

What does this process look like?

Crawl space conversions are excavation and structural projects. The home’s existing foundation is preserved and sometimes strengthened if needed. However, unlike many other home renovations, this a project where residents can remain safely in the home, living above the excavation.

Before planning the layout, we take measurements and ask for your most ambitious ideas (e.g., an entire wall of windows, bi-folding patio doors, exposed beams). We then pull together a few different plans and work with you to further customize and finalize it.

Once we have a plan, we install temporary structural supports and start the excavation starts (where we excavate the earth beneath your home). We then build the exterior walls, pour a new slab (concrete), and install structural supports. If we are finishing the space, we then move on to plumbing, electrical, and finishing.

How long does a project like this take?

Most of our projects are completed within two weeks, but we have also completed quality projects in less than that! We always work with your deadlines. However, if custom doors or windows are ordered, completion of those projects are dependent on when materials arrive.

“We were at a point that every new family hits, we were outgrowing our home. Moving felt like the only option, but we loved our home and location. That is until we talked Functional Foundations. Functional Foundations converted our 1 story, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom home into 2 stories, 4 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and added a family room with backyard access. All without changing a single thing on our exterior. The entire project was complete in less than 3 months, and we were able to live in the house while the construction happened. We could not be happier with the process and the results!”
